Sur proposition de Gatien Du Bois, l’artiste irlandaise Niamh McCann a investi l’espace du V2Vingt avec une proposition plastique qui entremêle des références au cinéma, à l’architecture et à l’histoire. McCann – actuellement en résidence artistique au Penthouse Art Residency – rassemble différents points de référence et les distille dans une sorte de poésie sculpturale.
A l’origine de ‘Laboratoire: Gallery 20’ le film The Black Cat, réalisé par Edgar G. Ulmer en 1934. Le personnage central de ce film d’horreur est l’inquétant Hjalmar Poelzig, un architecte autrichien. Son nom est inspiré d’une personne avec qui Edgar G. Ulmer a toujours prétendu avoir collaboré: Hans Poelzig, l’architecte, peintre et scénographe juif allemand à qui l’on doit l’énorme et légendaire bâtiment de l’IG Farben à Francfort. Un complexe architectural construit pour l’administration de ce conglomérat qui, durant la seconde guerre mondiale, participa à l’effort de guerre allemand en produisant de nombreux produits chimiques dont le gaz d’exterminations Zyklon B. ….
Ce qui intéresse Niamh McCann c’est l’imbrication des faits et de la fiction, les couches d’histoire et de fable qui se chevauchent et qui sont contenues dans les structures culturelles et physiques que nous construisons. Laboratoire: Gallery 20’ sonde le rôle du trope architectural et de l’environnement sociologique et politique comme moments iconiques. L’artiste s’intéresse aux objets comme palimpseste d’influences disparates et d’idéalismes séparés de leurs incarnations originales par le temps; des sédiments de récits et significations divers. Ces explorations prennent la forme d’objets lapidaires qui se concrétisent au travers de multiples médiums.

A propos de l’artiste
Niamh McCann est un artiste irlandaise qui vit et travaille à Dublin. Elle est lauréate de plusieurs prix du Arts Council of Ireland et a bénéficié de plusieurs résidences artistiques: Cemeti Arthouse, Indonésie; HIAP-International Artists’ Residency, Cable Factory, Helsinki, Finlande; URRA Artist Residency, Argentine; Leitrim Sculpture Centre, Irlande. Son travail a été récompensé par le Perspective award et le EV+A exhibition award.
Parmi ses expositions solos récentes on note: La Perruque (Protest Song) au MAC Belfast et Just Left of Copernicus à Visual Carlow. Son travail a également été présenté dans de nombreuses exposition de groupe dont: Future Perfect, Rubicon-Projects à Bruxelles; Changing States: Contemporary Art and Francis Bacon’s Studio, BOZAR, Belgique; Time Out of Mind: Works from the IMMA Collection, Twenty au Irish Museum of Modern Art de Dublin; In Other Words à la galerie Lewis Glucksman de Cork; This little bag of dreams à la Catherine Clark Gallery de San Francisco, et Without-Boundaries, Wäinö Attonen Museum of Art en Finlande.
Plusieurs de ses œuvres ont intégré des collections publiques et privées: collections: Irish Museum of Modern Art, The OPW, Limerick City Gallery, Swansea City Council, The London Institute, et la Collection Hiscox (Londres).
A propos du lieu d’exposition
Initié par l’artiste plasticien Laurent Jourquin en 2017, le V2Vingt est un espace d’art contemporain de 10,25 mètres sur 4,10 mètres qui accueille des expositions durant toute l’année. Cet espace est situé au 5e étage d’un ensemble immobilier dont une partie fut un dépôt du Grand Bazar du boulevard Anspach (conçu en 1920 par l’architecte Victor Horta) tandis que d’autres bâtiments avaient été construits en 1884 par la Compagnie belge-américaine pour la Fabrication de Savons. Le V2Vingt souhaite soutenir les artistes avec qui il collabore. Ce soutien se traduit par la mise à disposition de son espace, de matériel d’exposition, d’une aide logistique, d’une communication virtuelle et d’un dialogue avec les acteurs du monde de l’art.

Laboratoire: Gallery 20 [Furtive Tears]
Niamh McCann
Upon a proposal by Gatien Du Bois, the Irish artist Niamh McCann has invested the V2Vingt space with a work that interweaves references to cinema, architecture and history. McCann – currently in residency at the Penthouse Art Residency – draws together different reference points and distils them into a kind of sculptural poetry.
The starting point of Laboratoire: Gallery 20’ is to be found in the film The Black Cat, directed by Edgar G. Ulmer in 1934. The central character of this horror movie is the worrisome Hjalmar Poelzig, an Austrian architect. His name is inspired by a person with whom Edgar G. Ulmer has always claimed to have collaborated with: Hans Poelzig, the Jewish German architect, painter and scenographer to whom we owe the huge legendary building of IG Farben in Frankfurt. This architectural complex was built for the administration of this conglomerate which, during the Second World War, participated in the German war effort by producing many chemicals including Zyklon B extermination gas. Through this evolving project McCann is becoming increasingly fascinated with the relation between monuments, the constructed landscape and negotiating the complex narrative of self. Works at V2Vingt are a laboratory for works to be shown in the The City Gallery Hugh Lane, Dublin October 2018.
McCann’s interest is in the interweaving of fact and fiction, the overlapping layers of history and fable that are contained within the cultural and physical structures we construct. Laboratoire: Gallery 20’ probes the role of the architectural trope and the sociological and political environment as iconic moments. The artist is interested in objects becoming the palimpsest of disparate influences and idealisms removed from original incarnation by time; layered repositories of various narratives and meanings. These explorations take the form of concise built-objects that materialize through multiple mediums.

Niamh McCann is an Irish Artist based in Dublin. She is the recipient of various Arts Council of Ireland awards, and residencies at Cemeti Arthouse, Indonesia; HIAP, International Artists’ Residency, Cable Factory, Helsinki, Finland; URRA Artist Residency, Argentina; Leitrim Sculpture Centre, Ireland; and of Perspective and EV+A exhibition awards.

About the exhibition space
Initiated by visual artist Laurent Jourquin in 2017, V2Vingt is a contemporary art space measuring 10.25 meters by 4.10 meters, which hosts exhibitions throughout the year. This space is located on the 5th floor of a building complex, part of which used to be a warehouse for the Grand Bazar located on the Anspach boulevard (and designed in 1920 by architect Victor Horta) while other parts of the building complex were built in 1884 by the Compagnie belge-américaine pour la Fabrication de Savons. V2Vingt supports the artists with whom it collaborates. This support is reflected in the availability of its space, exhibition material, logistical support, virtual communication and dialogue with the actors of the art world.
