Quarante mètres au carré
Yasmina Assbane questions the dominant perception of the women body as an object of
decoration and consumption of the gaze. Her artistic approach is strongly rooted in the daily
mundanity and in the material life of familiar objects essentially attributed to women. They are
emptied of their primary function through dismantling and symbolic reconfiguration strategies.*
Drawing in Arnaud Laroche’s work is not preliminary to the production of his sculptures. Rather, it could be seen as a form of rehearsal or a way of playing scales that ultimately takes on a fragile autonomy. It is a study of gesture, a point of contact with paper – cut up or not – between surface and material, and graphite pencil, neither strictly line nor purely surface. What in this exercise makes image? At what point do we perceive a form, an identity? What in this process is of the order of convention, what is of the order of choice, of the order of consciousness? Yet the image keeps coming back and persists. The drawing would only be the material part of it.
